Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd (JISL), India’s leading micro irrigation company, has been awarded a Rs 569-crore Poorigali Integrated Micro Irrigation Project by Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd, Government of Karnataka, through National Competitive Bidding.

According to a company filing, this project is the largest micro irrigation project in India, and the first of its kind based on the concept of ‘resource to root.’

“Being the first of its kind in the country, the project will cover 25,317 acres of farm area spread over 51 villages in the rain-shadow region of Malavalli Taluka of Mandya district in Karnataka. Out of the total water availability of 2.29 TMC, the project will utilize only 1.97 TMC, still ensuring cultivation for both the Kharif and Rabi seasons, besides meeting the perennial-crop water needs in the project area, thereby not only ensuring water security but also doubling the farm income.”

The project involves lifting and conveying water from the river Cauvery all the way to the end user-farmer in a network of closed conveyance piping system, thereby saving water loss due to evaporation and percolation.

Major crops considered under this project would be vegetables, pulses, oilseed crops like groundnut, semi-arid crops like ragi, vegetables and floriculture. The project, which is expected to benefit more than 15,000 farmers, will be implemented in 18 months’ time.

Two days ago, JISL, through its US-based wholly owned subsidiary, entered into an agreement to acquire 80% stake in two US entities. As a part of this, two of the US’s largest micro-irrigation dealers- Agri-Valley Irrigation, Inc. (AVI) and Irrigation Design and Construction, Inc. (IDC), have entered into an agreement to merge ownership of their businesses into a newly formed distribution company.

Based in Maharashtra, Jain Irrigation Systems is a diversified entity with turnover in excess of $1 billion. The company has a global presence with 30 manufacturing bases spread across four continents. The company supplies its products to 126 countries with assistance from 6,700 dealers and distributors worldwide with a reach out to over 45 lakh farmers.
