Gail’s Rs 12,940 crore project hits regulatory hurdle
The Rs12,940 crore Jagdishpur-Haldia-Bokaro-Dhamra natural gas pipeline project, recently awarded to Gail India by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, has hit a regulatory roadblock as the Petroleum & Natural Gas Regulatory Board has questioned the validity of the government's decision.
In a letter to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the board said no gas pipeline or city gas distribution network could be laid, built, operated or expanded without authorisation from the regulator.
The government cannot also impose directives upon the regulator on awarding such projects to specific companies, Gail in this case, said the letter, a copy of which ET has seen. According to it, the government, in public interest, may form an opinion about the need for pipeline and city gas distribution.
