
Kashmir to get first electric train in October 2022
Kashmir’s first electric train will go live on 137 km long Baramulla-Banihal rail corridor from 2 October 2022.
The Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory administration, Indian Railways and Indian Railway Construction Company Limited have been working together on this project since August 2019.
The project’s PCEE inspection will be conducted on 26 September 2022. On 2 October 2022, the project will be inaugurated.
The total cost of the project is Rs 324 crore. The Railways has already conducted three to four trials from Budgam-Baramulla. Trials of the Budgam-Banihal section will begin from 20 September 2022.
Work is also underway to link Banihal with Katra. Once complete, Kashmir will be better connected with the rest of the country.
The total route length for electrification is 137.73 km with three main sub-stations of Qazigund, Budgam, and Baramulla, from where power will be supplied to the overhead equipment of the rail line.
